Experience before you go . . .
100 Tours, 100 Tours......Onnnnnnne Hunnnnnndred Tooooours!! That's a lot of good beer and a lot of fabulous conversation with new best friends met on the Hoppin' Brewery Tour the last 3 1/2 years!! So on this wintery January day we had weathered the snowy conditions like true mid westerners with layers and smiles on! We had two tours under our belts and since I was the HBTDD, very limited personal brews were consumed, where as Brad was riding shotgun and doing a little bit more sampling. "Brad, you hungry?", "Well as a matter of fact I am and you know what, it is dinner time"! "Let's get to Flapjack and find something that looks interesting in the hood". "Sounds like the plan Stan". "Don't need to be coy Roy, just listen to me"! And away we went slip sliding away!
Capri Due, right off of Windsor Ave, was that interesting place we chose and boy howdy did we chose well! I was all over the special with short ribs smothered in all kinds of goodness and Brad went with stuffed manicotti with homemade marinara sauce......it's good to be alive and well and on the HBT!! Smiling tummies and a short walk across the railroad tracks and there we were, in the presence of Flapjack Brewery! Front sign selfie and in we went. Functional, clean and good vibe right at the get go with tables and chairs running the wall on the right with bar running the length of the wall to the left. Two bar stools right on the corner reserved for the gruesome twosome and we're in! Sara with no "h" is the recipient of the tour's mission and Brad and I seem to be much more excited than Sara about Flapjack being the 100th tour stop! Even the guy to my immediate left continues to work his phone as if it's the last thing on earth he will ever do. So Brad and I look at each other and the only thing to really do in these situations is to order a cold beer!!!
I interrupt this 100th Hoppin Brewery Tour write up for a news alert.......Coronavirus (COVID-19) turns the world upside down! Finished the first week of self quarantine and fixing to head into the second week! Never in my lifetime did I ever think I'd live to see anything like this. But this too shall pass!! On a personal note our 22 year old son is in Colorado and has no job, no car and no money and no germ free way to get out of there. So in a couple days we're driving 14 hours to pick him and his stuff up and drive back to Tucson.....nothing runs deeper than family!!! God bless all of us!!! Okay back to scheduled HBT write up!
I order a Purple Family Portrait - Hazy IPA (6.5%, 40 IBU) hazy, dazy and hoppy. Brad ordered a sample of Boltneck - Coffee Stout (6.8%, 55 IBU) coffee, chocolate and wise. We also tried samples of Ba Fang Ghoul - Double IPA (8.5%, 75 IBU), Spine Knob - Black IPA (6.7%, 74 IBU) and Weather - Pale Ale (5.7%, 46 IBU).
Now since we had already eaten dinner we didn't indulge in Flapjack's wood fired fabulous pizza that everyone raves about but I gotta tell it smelled really good....next time!
To my left the iPhone guy finally comes up for air and looks my way and I immediately engage and ask if his fingers were cramping up, of course with a smile and a quick howdoyoudo. Come to find out his name is Homher and get this, he's a musician! Our third tour of the day and our third musical reference. We had Brian at Kinslahger building amplifiers, we had Chris and Mick at One Lake Brewing the trombone players and now we have Homher at Flapjack who's in a band and plays drums, accordion, guitar, bass guitar and he even sings. Definitely a crazy unique, one of a kind day but on the Hoppin' Brewery Tour we never know what we're going get but we're always surprised and amazed at what we discover.
Another fun filled day on the tour with lots of twists and turns and surprises! Flapjack is a neighborhood favorite and it would be one of mind if I lived in the area! Next time in Berwyn definitely make a stop for wood fired pizza and small batch craft beer at Flapjack! Then sit back and enjoy and tell them that Brad and Clyde sent you!
Until next time and remember.....
Go get'cha one!!!
