Experience before you go . . .
Well after the Wendell, Brad and Clyde trifecta in matching attire, we had to take a day or two rest before the next Hoppin Brewery Tour.....you know the march to 500 tours can’t be rushed!!
Still living out of a suitcase I manage to slip outta Naperville and head north to my old stomping grounds from 5th to 9th grade in Baraboo, Wisconsin where I still have some great friends. Golf was on the agenda at Christmas Mountain where my buddy Randy and his wife live. So we golfed, told old stories, gave each other a hard time and drank beer and Long Island Iced Teas....boy howdy!! Basically had a fabulous time and even though we don’t see each other very often we don’t miss a beat when we do. Spent the nite at Randy’s and the next morning I needed to check out the relatively new brewery which is a start of a new revitalization plan of some under used land close to the beautiful Devils Lake State Park. Eventually townhomes or condos will be built in there and according to the spec drawings they look fabulous, so fabulous that my wife Kat and I just might entertain buying one. So I sent out the lunch at the brewery text and my buddy Robbie answered the call so I met him and his wife Sue at noon at Tumbled Rock!
Beautiful setting, ample parking and a fabulous wood, metal and glass stand alone building designed to welcome, entertain and refresh their guests with a diverse menu and refined craft beer. What don’t you like about that.....nothing!!!! We decided to sit at a hi-top table for four outside in the shade, perfect!! Ellie, our waiter greeted us with a smile and my mind immediately went to the movie, “The Notebook”! Ellie was the main character, very cute just like our Ellie and I know I’m showing my feminine side but I love that movie! It’s all about how love trumps all!!! We perused the beer menu and ordered some refreshments. Ladies first....Sue orders the Dutch Farmer - Dutch Lager (5%, 17 IBU) huge ginger aroma on the nose, notes of lemon and fresh ginger, finishes with a crisp malt and chamomile and lemon tartness (hard to mess with writing perfection....taken right from the website...I know when I’m beat!) Robbie goes with the Sarrington Road - English IPA (6%, 42 IBU) notes marmalade, sweet orange, and earthiness is followed by a toasted biscuit maltiness from the Marris Otter and English Caramel malts....beaten again....drats!! And I order the Devils Doorway - Double IPA (9.3%, 88 IBU) big, bright and juicy, generously hopped with Citra, Simcoe, and Amarillo during boil, and dry hopped with Cascade, Simcoe, and Amarillo....thus the double! As we relaxed, we gazed out onto the grassy area where there's more tables, places to spread a blanket and a raised stage for live music and beyond that I come to find out is the separate production building....this place rocks....tumble rocks!! We’re hungry so we order up some grub. Bison bone marrow appetizer, Hot Chicken sandwich and the Wagyu Burger.....unique and good eating!!
Once finished, we mosey across the grassy knoll towards the production building where we get a back stage looksie at the equipment and a meet and greet from Ericka the Master Brewery. Ericka is knowledgeable, energetic and passionate about all things brewing and she’s also really nice.....happy brewing Ericka!!
Tumbled Rock is great place and is getting a big hug from the local Baraboo folks! South Central Wisconsin is where it’s at and definitely make it a destination stop on your next road trip!!
Until next time and remember.....
Go get'cha one!!!
