Alrighty, the Hoppin Brewery Tour is back on the road! We took a little hiatus after Sacred Water in Montana because of all the holiday parties and then after all the partying the whole famn damily came down with Mr. Omicron. Me first, then my wife Kat and waiting in the batter's box was our son Jake. Cold symptoms, sore throat and not a lot of energy for 7-10 days and then slowly but shirley, I know, don't call me shirley, we crawled back to being normal. This virus is definitely getting weaker. I had big daddy covid in December 2020 and it packed a punch but I stayed home keeping in the main bedroom and of course the TV entertainment room, and binge watched action movies and after 14-21 days I felt kinda like a human again. Now omicron, other than the brutal sore throat it's not like big daddy! Not being a Virologists or anything, but being a sports fan and when a sports team gets tired say it's the 4th quarter, the 2nd half, the 9th inning, the 10th round, the last lap, the 3rd period......you name it, you're tired, fatigued, not as strong as you once were and then boom, the games over and you lost! So I'm thinking this damn virus is petering out, the games about over, the fans are fixing to celebrate.....and boy will it be a celebration!!
So the HBT needed to bring in the New Year.....2022!! A little late on the take being the end of January but we're on it! Cool thing about Arizona is that you can golf year around and it doesn't matter if you're good or not and I'm not that good but I enjoy the game, as frustrating as it is but every round I play I have a few shots that makes it look like I know what I'm doing and then some that are OMGBG!! A long straight drive, a high beautiful approach shot on the green or a 10-20 foot putt, problem is those shots are never on the same hole....thus my 24.9 handicap!! So getting a little tired of our home course here in Tucson the boys decide to venture up to Scottsdale for a couple nites. A day at the Barrett Jackson Auto Auction and a couple rounds of golf, throw in some great restaurants and some cocktails and you got'cha a first class boys weekend!! Now this boys weekend was a little different than the previous ones as far as the mode of transportation. Our friend Jay and his beautiful wife Ann are dipping their toes into the private plane market and they wanted us to check out a Beechcraft Kingair 350i and we said boy howdy, let's go!! So we loaded 5 guys, 5 small bags and 5 golf bags, we buckled up, listened to safety features and up up and away we went!! Since Tucson to Scottsdale is 2+ hour drive we were in the air for 30 minutes give or take or the way we measured it....2 1/2 drinks! What a way to go!! I could get used to this.....oh yeah, takes deeper pockets than mine!! Maybe I could get a loan? Think I read that that's not a real good idea in retirement. Anyhow we landed, taxied, stopped and a big boy 8 passenger brand new Lincoln Navigator SUV pulled up right next to the plane. We transferred all the luggage and we were on our way, lickety-split!!!
The three days and two nites were chocked full of manly activities and the first was the annual Barrett Jackson Auto Auction. I won't go into all the money exchanging hands but this event is massive! One standout was a 2023 #001 (first off the assembly line) Mid-Engine Chevrolet Corvette that went for $3,600,000. Now considering that a new one will have a sticker price of around $100,000 I do believe the buyer wanted the first one and how much he spent was not a concern. Of course after walking 5 miles at the auction we had to eat a lot of meat and the only place to do that is Fogo de Chao......the all you can eat Brazilian Steak House!! OMG, need I say more!!
Okay, we're at the craft beer stage of the write up. I know, I was wondering when we were gonna talk beer also. So after we chowed at Fogo we bee lined it to OHSO Brewery! Now with the name of OHSO you'd think that you have a OH a SO SO brewery but that couldn't be farther from the truth. OHSO stands for Outrageous Homebrewer's Social Outpost. This is big brewery with a lot of moving parts! After parking and the patented front sign selfie we hit the door and immediately realized this is one popular brewery. Very expansive inside with tall ceilings, a huge bar and lots of seating. The brewery continued with an outdoor covered space that seemed the size of half a football field with tables and chairs everywhere, it was dog friendly and even had a pooch water trough. We worked our way down the middle of the field and commandeered a table. Soon after, Therse was tableside, smiling and asking for our order. Three out of four wanted the brown liquor and since I'm the beer guy I ordered the Hoppy - American IPA (7.1%, 58 IBU) smooth bitterness, hop aromas, floral, pine, and grapefruit. A couple other local favorites were the Campy - New England IPA (6.8%, 35 IBU) berry, stone fruit, brewed with copious amounts of Strata, Citra, Amarillo, and Mosaic hops and then there was the Handlebar Hefe - Wheat Beer, Hefeweizen (5.5%, 8 IBU) banana and clove.....perfect!
The long day was coming to a close but what a fabulous place to end on. OHSO is a definite stop when up in Gilbert, Arizona! Bring your favorite dog friend, drink a beer, eat some food and just chill.....Gilbert style!!
Until next time and remember.....
Go get'cha one!!!
