Tour Stop 136 - Rusty Bull Brewing - 10/11/2022
337 King St, Charleston, SC, 29401 #843-225-8600
Experience before you go . . . Well 2022 has been the year for adding new Hoppin' Brewery Tour states...Alabama, California, Oregon, South Carolina and Georgia (#137 Moon River...yet to be written). That's 23 states with 27 more to go...cheers!!! Between Beer Drinking Buddy Brad aka Tour Guide/Tech Support and yours truly aka The Lager Blogger we're lighting it up or should I say drinking it up across the country! Both of our doctors said, "Boys, everything in moderation"! Takes a long time to find Docs like that and we're not sure if the HBT fits into that category or not but we're pushing through in search of primo barley pops in all corners of the country..."Have Beer Will Travel"!! So this little adventure into the historic Deep South of the Civil War, Southern Mansions and Grits, was a fabulous getaway. First stop was Charleston, South Carolina and it was just dripping with History. This port city founded in 1670, is defined by its cobblestone streets, horse-drawn carriages and pastel antebellum houses, particularly in the elegant French Quarter and Battery districts. The Battery promenade and Waterfront Park both overlook Charleston Harbor, while Fort Sumter, a federal stronghold where the first shots of the Civil War rang out, lies across the water. Beautiful city and a lot of fun just to walk and explore which is exactly what we did. King Street in the Downtown Historic District is where it's all happening and this is where we came upon Rusty Bull Brewing satellite location. The main brewery where all the brewing takes place is across town in North Charleston on 3005 W. Montague Ave but King St was where we were at and there was serious beer drinking to be had. So the three boys managed the front sign selfie and we moseyed in the front door and over to the bar we went where 3 bar stools were waiting our arrival. HBT card to Ms. Barkeep and Bing Bang Boom the Hoppin Brewery Tour adds another stop to the archives in #136. Since this is a satellite location it's pretty bare bones but effective! I'm sure King Street rent is outta whack so as long as there's a bar with stools, a few tables and a urinal, us boys are good!! Bring on the barley pops! Mike orders a Free Trippel - a classic Belgium Trippel (9.5%, 35 IBU) saaz hops with coriander, suggests pairing with sky diving and ghost tours. Guy brings on Over Board - Imperial Stout (12%, 60 IBU) northern brewers and cascade hops with roasted and flaked barley and chocolate malt with maple and "you had me at bacon" and goes well with donuts, french toast and of course grits! When you order food in the south, the question you're asked quite often is "What do you want with your grits"? There's plain grits, chezzy grits, sugar grits, bacon grits and the famous grits grits, which is a double helpin of grits!! Back to the beer...I've evolved in my IPA beer drinking so now I'm on the Hazy IPA kick. Not sure if it's how it sounds when you say it or the cloudy appearance or the less hoppy bitterness and more fruity taste…whatever it is I'm in! Juice Juice - NE Hazy IPA (6.7%) just what the beer doctor ordered, juicy, smooth and refreshing. No new best friends at the bar with a new, interesting life's story and the reason might be it's 1:36 in the early afternoon right after lunch on a Tuesday...but we're in vaca mode. Then I realize the two guys to my immediate right are my new best friends. Guy and Mike and I are the happy husbands of the Three Fabulous Sisters!! All of us married 45, 37 and 32 years which is an anomaly these days. Guy and me and the associated spousal units and Mike plus one will be here soon, we are definitely in the go-go years….60-70 go-go, 70-80 slow go and 80-90 (god willin) no go. So we've known each other a long long time and hopefully there's a lot more of these adventures in the near future. Charleston has a lot of offer so figure out how to get there and drop by the Rusty Bull for a cold one!! Until next time and remember...... Go get'cha one!! |
