Have you ever heard of fashion sense? No not the....can't wear white pants after Labor Day kinda sense but the interior decorating kinda of sense. I know, I know this is a brewery tour and sometimes I go off the rails, but what I've noticed about life is when you're off the rails is when the interesting stories begin. So hang with me and let's see what happens.
Five years ago in 2012 we bought our Little House on the Desert, get it....Desert not Prairie....Michael Landon, Melissa Gilbert. Well anyway, along with the house we bought all the furniture and accessories which were 1980's Florida decor with a peppering of wall plates and a grand father clock, not quite our style. But it was fabulous as a turn key. We'd turn the key, buy beer and food for the fridge and we were good to go. Did you like how I mentioned beer before food.....I know, pretty cool right. But now it's 2017, we're retired, we're spending winters out here so we want to put our own touch and make it feel like it's really ours. I'm thinking a brewery motif with vintage neon beer signs....I just got the stink eye from my wife Kat! So anyhow were selling and giving away the old and in with the new.
"We'll go to Scottsdale but we'll have to do a Hoppin Brewery Tour". This is what I told our NIDBF....(New Interior Design Best Friend) Randy. Randy has this Interior Design thing figured out. She's been at it for a long time and she knows her stuff. So if Randy says we're going to Scottsdale to buy furniture, we're going to Scottsdale......as long as there's a brewery tour thrown in the mix.
Randy orchestrated a fabulous day in Scottsdale. It was like bing, bang, boom....three stops, 2 chairs, a sofa, a nutritional lunch and an area rug later it was 3:00 and did someone say beer? I pull up my friendly AroundMe app and right around the corner is Badwater Brewery. We find a great parking spot, walk across the street and yes we have the correct address but a different name. Come to find out that bad water was not a good ingredient for great beer. Place went out of bidness and was replaced by a nice bar but it wasn't a brewery. So being true to our HoppinBreweryTour.com mission, we venture on and a mile later we're at Goldwater Brewery. I think gold water is better than bad water when it comes to beer. The brewery really wasn't open for business but they let us in anyway....thanks Jason! This place rocks! Production to the left, bar front and center and running down to the right. High ceiling, great friendly and very welcoming feel. Randy heads for the bar in true Hoppin Brewery Tour fashion. Jason serves her up a sample of Black Gold - Porter American (6.2%, 23 IBU) and I get a taste of 24K - Imperial/Double IPA (9.4%, 107 IBU)....now that's an IPA, dank background of hoppy pine, big citrus of grapefruit with a dry bitter finish...oolala! Kat goes for the light S.M.A.S.H.E.D. - Lager Helles (4.8%, 19 IBU) "Single Malt And Single Hop Easy Drinker". I love this craft beer craze!!!
"Do you want to see the cellar"? "You dang straight we want to see the cellar"! As we follow Jason out the door and around the back to a metal door and some steep stairs, "Watch your step"! As we descend down the stairs the temperature drops with each step. And then a gaze to the right and a WOW, 20 feet down I'm guessing is the cellar floor. Barrel aging craft beer on the wall to the left and a very interesting set up along the right wall. Four 4' in diameter tunnels going into the wall, three are filled with custom built fermenting tanks and the one on the end is open. Come to find out that this was a old shooting range back in the day and it was sound proof being so far beneath the street. Jason said they have private parties and tasting down here! What a very cool venue for something different and out of the ordinary. You just never know what you'll see on the Hoppin Brewery Tour!
Jason, thanks for opening up your way cool brewery that's solid gold as far as I'm concerned!!
Until next time and remember.........
Go get'cha one!!
